The last and final leg of the trip was to Independence, MO and Kansas City. We initially weren't going to go to Independence but we got done earlier than expected at the last three places. We stopped at the visitors center and learned about the history and significance of Independence. There is a ton of history in that city and boy did I feel like I didn't know ONE THING. I'm glad we went there! We stopped by the temple site that the Prophet Joseph Smith dedicated. A temple doesn't stand in Independence yet but I'm sure it will one day.
Right when you drive up to the visitors center you can't help but see this huge building. haha It is the Community of Christ's (formerly known as RLDS) temple. We found out from the sister missionaries that you can go inside and walk around and also look in their museum where they had the original door to Liberty Jail, some of Joseph Smith's personal things and the ring that Joseph gave Emma. It was kind of interesting to step inside someone's temple in traveling clothes. haha It definitely is not the kind of temple I am used to. Very interesting to see though. I am impressed though, with the relaiontship the LDS church and the Community of Christ Church have been able to keep. They are friendly and supportive of the LDS church. I just wish they had the whole truth ya know.
The guy who told us what things were in the CC Temple kept saying, "your church gave us this thing and our church gave your church that thing." It was funny. He was a humble guy and just wanted everyone to get along. :)
After the Independence stop I made sure we stopped at Oklahoma Joe's. It was on Man vs. Food and everyone says that's where you need to go. Let me tell you...BEST BBQ EVER! The ribs were to die for and the brisket is money! It was funny though, I knew that it was connected to a gas station but when I told Marc to pull into the gas station to eat he was so confused. He was so concerned and was nervous we wouldn't be able to sit down. haha It was perfect!
Of course we had no clue how much food they give you and Marc and I both ordered the same thing. We could have shared one meal and been just fine but it was perfect! SO DELICIOUS! If we go back I am getting this sandwich that everyone was eating called the z-man.
After our delicious meal we headed home and had to stop on the way at a McDonalds for an ice cream! We were home by 8:30 that night. Not too bad of a trip if you ask me. The greatest part was that we didn't feel rushed. We easily got everything in we wanted and stayed as long as we wanted. The kids were fantastic! I am so glad we made it happen. BEST TRIP EVER! Next stop...Nauvoo (next year). haha
